The Carpet Crawlers by Genesis
This one has been sitting on the shelf for a few days. I was trying to decide if I liked the opening and closing sequences. I finally decided to let you guys tell me your thoughts. From wikipedia: “The Carpet Crawlers”, also sometimes listed as “Carpet Crawl”, “The Carpet Crawl” or “Carpet Crawlers”, is a song originally from the 1974 Genesis concept album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. The ethereal counter melody is played by guitarist Steve Hackett. In this portion of The Lamb story, the main character Rael finds himself in a red carpeted corridor, filled with strange creatures that are slowly crawling towards a red door at the end of the hall. Rael is able to move freely, so he dashes by them towards the door and goes through it. Behind the door is a table with a candle lit feast of food on it, and behind that, a spiral staircase that leads upwards out of sight. From allexperts.com (warning – mature theme) I’m sorry for the late response. I usually get things answered within two days at the worst, but I’ve been behind in e-mail lately. I also wanted to make sure I gave you a fairly detailed account of what I think the song is about and not give you a half-baked answer. I have discussed a lot of The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway with other fans over the past four years. I’ve written my interpretation of the whole piece which can be found at: members.aol.com The Carpet Crawlers is one song that comes up a lot. The view I take on the song is that it’s a metaphor for birth …

Peter Gabriel’s vocal cords are immortal, I swear. This sounds almost identical to the 1999 version.
One of my first favourites… so good..
i like phil collins but peter gabriel is the best
@thelettermanv As well, if we take on your analogy, sperm must “get in” the egg to create life; to get out into the world. It’s very possible the stair case signifies birth and death simultaneously; an ascension to “heaven” or whatever it is you want to call it, and at the same time, to the world. Again, “getting out”.
Your little analysis opened my eyes to this song. Fascinating.
On another note, Genesis is always excellent. Artistic and thought-provoking music.
I think the best analogy for this song is the constant struggle of life, the struggle for life to be created, and the feeling of being trapped. Like the staircase leading forever upwards, we as humans tend to have this need to ascend our bonds in some way. Humans have always wanted to do this, hence why we longed for the flight that we saw in birds, and crafted planes. In this way, we can see the sperm, and unborn babies, to be the same… It is always about “getting out”; going upwards.
@Backspace85all supper’s ready

i love it..!
i’m not the biggest peter gabriel era genesis fan but this is good. i prefer the 1976-1992 era
awesome Gabriel’s last effort with the band he was the true genius in concert
I’ve been listening this since i was 12 years old. I’m 20 now and this song (along with many others songs from Genenis) really touches me. Don’t know why, but i like Peter’s voice better dan Phil’s.. If they are combined it’s MAGICAL.
Stupendo brano…
Bellissima l’immagine del fuoco…
caldo ed accogliente…
Grazie
Giulia
