Carpet runners and more

There are two basic methods for installing carpet on stair treads. One method is referred to as cap and band and consists of separate pieces, the cap which covers the stair treads and the band which covers the risers. This article will detail how to install it using the second method, known as the waterfall method. In the waterfall method one piece of carpet is used to cover both the tread and the riser.

Before beginning the installation be sure to assemble all the necessary tools and supplies. These include a measuring tape, tack strips, staples or nails, hammer, safety glasses, utility knife, and knee pads. You will also need a knee kicker and a stair tool, both of which can be found at your local home center or tool rental location.

You first step will be to remove any old carpet, padding, and tack strips from your stairs. Clean the area carefully and remove all nails or staples. To determine how much new carpet you need measure the tread and riser and multiply by the total number of stairs. If you plan on using a carpet pad be sure to add at least three inches per stair to cover the excess.

Once you have everything you need you are ready to begin by placing a tack strip in the stair crotch. Use your knee kicker to tighten the carpet into the crotch. You will use the knee kicker to stretch the carpet from the center of the tread to the tack strip. Use your carpet tool to attach the carpet to the tack strip. You can trim your carpet as needed using your utility knife. Once your carpet is smooth on the rise you can staple it to the stair lip. You are now ready to move to the next step. Remember to place a staple along the riser’s edge.

Always inspect each step before moving on to the next. Only move on if everything looks good. If not, take the time to fix it now. Keep repeating the process on each step until the job is done.
